Ford's Mach 4 Trademark Revives Mustang Sedan Speculation | Carscoops
The trademark follows Ford's alleged preview of a Mustang sedan during a dealer meeting two years ago.
The company has recently applied to trademark the name ‘Mach 4’ in the United States.
Last year, Ford reportedly presented dealers with a sketch of a potential four-door Mustang.
The concept of expanding the Mustang lineup isn’t entirely new. In fact, Ford already has the Mach-E, a five-door crossover that is technically part of the Mustang lineup. However, the idea of a four-door sports sedan is now appearing more plausible. Ford might be preparing to launch a vehicle that, while thrilling, may seem nearly sacrilegious to some—a four-door Mustang likely named the Mach 4.
Speculation regarding this new sedan has circulated for years, gaining momentum in 2022 when Ford released an official sketch of a four-door version based on the seventh-generation Mustang.
Fast forward to 2024, and reports from attendees at a Ford dealer meeting in Las Vegas indicate that another rendering of a four-door coupe, possibly named the Mach 4, was showcased. It has now come to light that Ford has filed a trademark for the name “Mach 4” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The application was submitted on February 25 and was initially reported by Ford Authority. While automakers frequently file trademark applications for various names, often without the intention to use them in production models, this situation feels a bit more significant. Considering that Ford has already presented both the potential model and the Mach 4 name to dealers, and has now officially trademarked it, the company might be moving forward with the development of the four-door Mustang.
There’s no denying that the notion of a Mustang sedan could alienate some purists, but such a vehicle might be less controversial than the all-electric Mustang Mach-E crossover introduced a few years back.
Ford’s Venture into the Mustang Sedan
The Blue Oval has explored the idea of a four-door Mustang for many years. In fact, the brand created its first four-door Mustang prototype in the 1960s. In the mid-2000s, it also reportedly developed a full-scale sedan model based on the S197 generation, which ultimately never reached production.
The sketch released by Ford a couple of years ago demonstrated that, if designed properly, a Mustang sedan could have an appealing appearance. The model featured recognizable front and rear designs but included a slightly more contoured roof in black, complementing the lower bumpers and rocker panels.
If Ford decides to bring this model to market (and doesn’t just file the trademark and leave fans in suspense), it’s likely that the Mach 4 will be equipped with similar engine options as the current Mustang coupe. This means the possibility of a powerful 5.0-liter Coyote V8 and a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder under the hood, perfect for those in need of four doors and substantial horsepower.
