If you're experiencing more wind noise than usual, you might want to grab some tape and give it a try.

A Cybertruck owner reported that a Tesla service technician used tape to address his wind noise problems. This post drew a flurry of comments from other truck owners dealing with similar issues. It's not just the Cybertruck; other Tesla models have also had complaints about high wind noise, and tape might provide a solution for some.

Historically, large luxury cars offered a significant advantage over sports cars and less expensive models: they were quiet inside, which is typically part of the premium experience. However, several Cybertruck owners feel that Tesla's latest model has overlooked this aspect.

One owner raised their concerns about excessive wind noise at a Tesla service center, where the suggested fix was surprisingly simple: tape. The technician recommended using standard tape, akin to the kind used for wrapping gifts or mending a torn page, to resolve an issue with a high-tech vehicle.

The customer shared their experience anonymously in a Facebook group dedicated to Cybertruck owners, questioning if the wind noise was a common issue. “Is it just my truck?! They said there’s nothing [sic] to do about it. Is that normal? Only on the driver side,” they commented, expressing their dissatisfaction with the response to their inquiry.

The service center’s document outlines the customer's complaint. "Wind Noise – I already addressed this issue, and was told it’s standard. After driving your loaner, I found that the noise in my car is much louder than in others." They tested another Cybertruck and noticed it was significantly quieter, indicating that the noise was not just a characteristic of the model but a specific problem with their vehicle.

The technician's solution involved tape. They acknowledged the problem but stated that because of the “body fitment specifications,” no adjustments to the panels could be made. The technician explained that “the noise heard is just normal air turbulence expected at higher speeds. No further action is needed at this time.”

The only action taken was described as “taping off the panel gap between the driver front fender and frunk reduced the noise.” This leaves one wondering if the frunk is still accessible, which would be problematic. Given that the source is anonymous, it could be fabricated, but the comments on the post suggest otherwise.

Multiple Cybertruck owners confirmed experiencing similar wind noise issues. One commenter noted, “The wind noise on mine is super loud, especially on windy days like yesterday.” Another reported using a decibel meter, finding that at 50 mph, the sound was 70 dB, increasing to 73 dB at 80 mph.

However, not everyone reported issues. Still, we've previously documented these complaints. Clearly, not every Cybertruck meets the 10-micron accuracy that Elon Musk once indicated was needed.

Wind noise grievances are not limited to the Cybertruck; buyers of Model 3 and Model Y have also raised similar concerns and have taken to forums to share DIY solutions.

It's important to note that EVs can sometimes produce what seems like excessive wind noise, which may actually be comparable to the noise in an average internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. The key difference is that an ICE drivetrain can dampen that wind noise to some extent.

I can understand the technician's perspective. They have limited options to address customer concerns, and taping panel gaps or transitions is a well-known effective way to reduce wind noise. I recently applied this technique to my own Ford Flex due to worn-out trim pieces, and it worked very well and is subtle when done properly.
