Kia Soul and Seltos Owners May Receive a New Engine in Recent Recall | Carscoops
A recall affecting nearly 140,000 vehicles is due to faulty piston rings.
Kia is recalling a total of 137,256 Souls and Seltos equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
These engines might have defective piston rings, leading to excessive oil consumption.
Kia has recorded over 400 incidents, including four fires that may be linked to this issue.
The recall concerns over 137,000 vehicles due to piston oil rings that could have been improperly manufactured, resulting in various issues, including engine damage and fire risk.
The affected models include the 2021-2023 Soul and 2021-2023 Seltos, both featuring 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. The majority of the recall involves 83,621 Souls and 53,635 Seltos’.
The government reports that a “quality deviation” could cause damage to the cylinder walls over time, leading to increased oil consumption and potentially causing engine damage or seizing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that, in rare instances, a fire might occur if engine oil leaks onto a hot exhaust component due to a hole in the engine block.
Dongsuh Federal-Mogul manufactured the faulty piston rings, and Kia first realized there was an issue last September, after observing a possible trend in engine replacement warranty claims for the 2021 Seltos and Soul. This led to an investigation of returned engines, revealing “damaged oil rings and cylinder wall scoring, with one engine having a hole in the engine block.”
The issue was ultimately linked to the piston rings, and Kia is aware of 409 incidents as well as around 400 reports of stalling. The company has also noted four possible related fires, all occurring in Souls.
As part of the recall process, dealers will inspect and replace the engine if needed. Technicians will also install piston-ring noise detection software, and notifications to owners are expected to be sent out in early April.
