Rare Porsche 959 Sport Driven Only 100 Miles Per Year | Carscoops
This exceedingly rare 959 is anticipated to sell for between $5.5 and $6.5 million when it goes up for auction on February 28 in Miami.
This Porsche 959 is one of fewer than 30 in Sport configuration out of a total of 292 units produced. The first owner kept it for less than a month but managed to drive it during that brief period.
Despite being older, the odometer shows a mere 3,757 miles, and this 959 is expected to reach a sale price of up to $6.5 million.
Acquiring one of Porsche’s premier supercars is not as simple as a visit to your local dealer with cash and an excellent credit score, especially considering that this model is no longer in production and was originally made in limited quantities, like this Porsche 959 Sport.
The 959 is well-known and can be viewed as one of the first truly modern supercars, thanks to its revolutionary technological features. It included adjustable suspension, an intelligent four-wheel-drive system, ultra-lightweight wheels, and more. While many of these features are common today, they were cutting-edge when the 959 debuted in 1986.
Weissach’s response to the Ferrari F40 was not only rare and fast but also represented a new approach to supercar manufacturing. Buyers could finally obtain exceptional acceleration, top speed, handling, and the prestige associated with owning one of the best-performing cars from a reputable manufacturer like Porsche without making significant compromises.
This specific 959 is not just another variant; it’s the even rarer Sport trim. Out of the 292 units made, only 29 were produced in this configuration, making it incredibly exclusive. The 959 Sport lacks the adaptive suspension found in other models, but this isn’t necessarily a drawback, as that system was complex and heavy.
By omitting it, along with additional elements like air conditioning and a stereo, this version lacks some of the comforts of the 959 Komfort trim but also weighs approximately 200 pounds less. Reduced weight typically enhances performance, and the original owner experienced that shortly after acquiring it.
Sold directly from the factory to Werner Funk, the initial owner informed RM Sotheby’s that he kept the car for “two to three weeks.” Since the vehicle wasn’t street-legal in the USA where Funk resided, he collected it in Germany and took it to a track day alongside a Ferrari F40 and 288 GTO. After selling it, the car changed hands several times and is currently in Florida, ready for auction.
With such a remarkable history and only 3,757 miles on the clock, it's sure to attract a hefty sum. The estimated price is between $5,500,000 and $6,500,000. Those interested in bidding on this ultra-rare Porsche 959 should prepare to participate in the RM Sotheby’s auction in Miami on February 28.
Interestingly, this isn’t even the top-valued car at the event. There are two Ferraris, an F50 and an Enzo, each also valued at $5,500,000-$6,500,000. Additionally, a 1908 Mercedes is projected to sell for $7,000,000-$9,000,000, and an original 1966 Ford GT40 MKII is expected to fetch between $8,000,000 and $11,000,000.
