      In Detroit, dozens of cars were rendered inoperable and immobilized after a significant water main rupture earlier this week, which inundated a neighborhood and caused extensive damage. Many vehicles were trapped in the swiftly rising waters, and numerous homes also suffered flooding, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate, at least temporarily.

      The incident took place around 2 a.m. on Monday, when a 54-inch water main at Beard and Rowan burst. This aged main quickly unleashed water across several streets. It took crews from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department and Great Lakes Water Authority five hours to shut the valves and redirect the water flow.

      Photos and videos from the scene revealed that, due to the severe cold, large portions of the floodwaters froze, resulting in extensive vehicle damage and leaving many residents without accessible means of transportation, as reported by ABC 7.

      As the water level rose to several feet, many vehicles were inundated. While some may be salvageable, it's likely that insurers will classify a significant number of cars as total losses due to the high cost of repairs.

      The city is taking steps to assist affected residents, including offering a free towing service to transport damaged vehicles to the 4th Precinct lot for storage. Furthermore, residents can contact the city’s Emergency Hotline to request complimentary Uber rides to work and grocery stores. Those without electricity, water, or heat have been provided accommodation in an extended-stay hotel, and the city has assured residents that it will cover repair expenses.

      Cleanup operations are actively progressing, but a complete return to normalcy in the neighborhood is expected to take some time. Residents are encouraged to file insurance claims promptly to expedite their recovery.
