The new fuel cell system is expected to be available after 2026 and will be utilized by BMW and Toyota.
Toyota is set to unveil their third-generation fuel cell on February 19, which is anticipated to be more cost-effective, more durable, and 20% more fuel-efficient.
This latest powertrain will be introduced post-2026 and will feature in various vehicles.
While the popularity of electric vehicles is on the rise, several automakers continue to invest in fuel cell technology, with Toyota being a leading advocate. The company has recently shared initial insights about their third-generation fuel cell system.
Scheduled for debut at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo on February 19, Toyota’s new fuel cell system is expected to represent a significant advancement. The manufacturer claims to achieve “significant cost” reductions through “innovations in cell design and manufacturing processes.”
In addition to affordability, Toyota’s upcoming fuel cell system aims to offer durability that is up to twice as high. The company indicates that the durability of their third-generation system is comparable to that of a diesel engine.
Engineers have also prioritized enhancing fuel efficiency, resulting in a 20% boost in “cruising range.” Currently, the Mirai can cover 402 miles (647 km) between refueling, but with hydrogen prices in California reaching unprecedented levels last year, any enhancement in fuel efficiency is a welcomed update.
Further details are expected next week, but Toyota has noted that the third-generation fuel cell system will be compatible with passenger cars, commercial vehicles, ships, trains, and stationary generators. It is planned for release after 2026 in North America, Europe, China, and Japan.
Since the Mirai's debut in 2014, Toyota has sold around 28,000 units worldwide, and their fuel cell system has been implemented in more than 2,700 applications, including buses and generators.
