NHTSA Probing 130,000 Honda Ridgelines Over Rear-View Camera Issues | Carscoops
Honda believed it had resolved the issue, but repaired Ridgelines are now experiencing problems.
Reports of wiring issues with rear-view cameras have been received by both Honda and the NHTSA.
Honda initiated its first related recall in late 2022 and a second one in mid-2024.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation has launched an inquiry into problems linked to two recalls issued by Honda for potentially defective rear-view camera systems in 2017-2024 Ridgeline models. This raises the question: should owners of affected Ridgelines be concerned? Let’s explore further.
Honda commenced a recall for 2017-2019 Ridgeline models on November 23, 2022, to address issues with rear-view cameras that could fail due to inadequate corrugated tubing and improperly secured zip ties protecting the wiring harness. The solution involved replacing the harness with a new one that featured longer protective corrugated tubing and better-secured zip ties.
On May 3, 2024, Honda followed up with a recall for 2020-2024 Ridgeline models that were also facing rear-view camera problems. This recall indicated that the wiring harness could break due to repeated opening and closing of the tailgate. Honda opted to replace these harnesses with versions designed to endure the wear and tear.
On February 11, the ODI began an engineering analysis into certain affected models because both fixes utilized the same supplier and materials. The NHTSA reported receiving one incident of a wiring harness failing after repairs made during the 2022 recall. Meanwhile, Honda stated that it has been informed of 14 cases of wiring harness failures following the corrections.
The ODI mentioned that its investigation “is being initiated to further evaluate the scope, frequency, and possible safety-related implications of the rear-view camera harness failures.” It's worth noting that the investigation is concentrating exclusively on 2017-2019 Ridgeline models impacted by the initial recall, not on the 2020-2024 Ridgelines involved in the mid-2024 recall. Overall, a total of 129,092 Ridgelines from the 2017-2019 model years are under scrutiny.
