Cleaning crews are left to manage potentially hazardous biohazards.
Workers with relevant information are urged to reach out to Stellantis.
Stellantis claims it is dedicated to ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.
Officials at Stellantis’ Kokomo Engine Plant in Indiana are facing an unforeseen and distressing workplace crisis, as an individual has been smearing feces on bathroom walls and leaving it in piles on the floor. This is not a strange marketing gimmick or the premise of a cheap reality series; it is a very real and repugnant problem occurring at the facility responsible for manufacturing engines for the Jeep Wrangler, Compass, and Grand Cherokee.
In a letter leaked on social media earlier this week, R. Tyler Adams, the manager of Stellantis’ Wellbeing, Health & Safety division, depicted the horrifying scenes cleanup crews are confronting. Feces has not only been spread across walls and left strewn on the floor but is also present on disability handlebars, door latches, and sink handles.
In the letter, Adams noted that cleaning crews are encountering “potentially dangerous biohazards that are completely avoidable,” and as of February 3, they have been directed to refrain from cleaning up any feces found in the bathrooms. Consequently, “each bathroom located in this disgusting condition will be promptly locked and taken out of service until further notice.”
“There may be individuals who have complaints and concerns regarding this procedure, but we will no longer request our SBM staff to clean up these incidents until a thorough investigation is conducted,” the letter further states. “If necessary, alternative approaches may be employed to help identify the culprit.”
Details about these “alternative approaches” are not specified, but employees with any information about the bathroom vandal are encouraged to report it anonymously through the company’s designated email.
Stellantis' Response
In a statement to Carscoops, Stellantis acknowledged that an internal investigation is ongoing, but clarified that, contrary to the letter's implication, restrooms will continue to be cleaned.
“Stellantis is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for its employees,” stated media relations manager Ann Marie Fortunate. “The company is currently looking into these disturbing incidents at its Kokomo Engine Plant, which have resulted in unsanitary bathroom facilities. While the investigation proceeds, the plant will ensure that bathroom facilities are regularly cleaned and sanitized, remaining accessible to employees. Those responsible for these deliberate acts will be held accountable.”
Currently, the plant’s restrooms are caught in a struggle between basic decency and a mysterious vandal with troubling behavior. It remains to be seen whether Stellantis’ investigation will uncover the perpetrator or if this situation will continue to taint the workplace.
