Warning: Encountering a Mk1 Volkswagen GTI in a severely neglected condition may induce nausea, dizziness, and palpitations. Fortunately, after WD Detailing discovered this Mk1 GTI that had been abandoned in a barn for over 25 years, they revitalized it and restored its former glory. Your side effects shouldn’t persist for long.
This particular 1983 GTI was among the earliest models produced at Volkswagen America’s then-nascent Westfalia plant in Pennsylvania, making it a sought-after Mk1 GTI for some V-Dub fans. Its black exterior paired with a red interior—considered one of the best color combinations—makes it particularly disappointing that it languished for over 25 years, encrusted with dirt, dust, and debris. It's also surprising that it was left in such disarray, given that at least one prior owner meticulously documented its mileage, maintenance, and repairs. At some point, though, care for the car ceased, leading to the decay that occurred over a quarter of a century. Nevertheless, even in its forsaken condition, the Mk1 GTI is stunning, boasting a Giugiaro-inspired design and striking 14-inch black wheels. What a remarkable vehicle.

It’s astonishing what a thorough power wash can achieve. WD Detailing doesn’t engage in bodywork, so they’re not fixing rust or replacing parts; they are solely focused on washing and detailing the vehicle. After a few blasts from the power washer and some polishing, it appears two decades younger.
Sure, the rust holes show its age a bit, but their numbers are limited. The transformation is still impressive.
However, the most significant change occurred inside the vehicle. Prior to detailing, the GTI’s interior was plagued by mold and mildew. After the detailing process, though, it appears nearly new. I've certainly encountered worse-looking interiors in my experience. Let’s also appreciate how fantastic the Mk1 GTI’s cabin is. With its perfectly designed four-spoke steering wheel, simple clock-style gauges, beautifully sculpted sport seats, console-mounted auxiliary gauges, and iconic golf ball shift knob, it looks incredibly inviting. It makes me want to hop in, seize the steering wheel, and navigate some winding back roads.

The Mk1 GTI is arguably the greatest hot hatch ever made. Other hot hatches from that period, such as the Peugeot 205 GTI, can lay claim to being superior in various ways—and perhaps they were. Yet, the Mk1 GTI was the first to truly perfect the concept, establishing a category that continues to thrive today, over 40 years later. That’s why it’s so wonderful to see this one endure and receive a fresh lease on life.
