A white Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX was reportedly detected speeding 68 km/h (42 mph) over the limit.
About 7 hours ago, Thanos Pappas reported on a Lancer EVO IX that was caught speeding on a highway in New South Wales, Australia. The vehicle was driving at 178 km/h (111 mph) in a 110 km/h (68 mph) zone. The police report indicated that the car was registered to the 21-year-old driver’s mother.
Having a performance vehicle parked at your parents' home can lead to temptation, especially for a young car enthusiast with more eagerness than self-control. This was the case for a 21-year-old in Australia, who was caught exceeding the legal speed limit in his mother’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX.
The incident occurred last Friday night on the Hume Highway in New South Wales. According to law enforcement, the white Evo was recorded at 178 km/h (111 mph) in a 110 km/h (68 mph) zone while maneuvering around several cars. This speed is 68 km/h (42 mph) over the limit and is significant enough to result in legal consequences rather than just a minor reprimand in Australia.
The joyride ended abruptly when Campbelltown Highway Patrol stopped the driver. When asked about his actions, the 21-year-old reportedly stated, “I don’t have an excuse for you,” which was perhaps the most candid response he could offer. A routine check revealed that the Evo IX was registered to his mother, which might have worked in his favor.
While the driver had his license revoked immediately, the car was not impounded or had its plates confiscated—likely because it wasn't legally his. According to CarExpert, he is still expected to appear in court next month facing Class A speeding and dangerous driving charges.
As noted by police, at a speed of 178 km/h (111 mph), the vehicle was traveling at a rate of 50 meters (164 feet) per second. They cautioned, “A crash at this speed is highly likely to result in catastrophic injuries or death. Please, for the sake of your families and ours, slow down.”
The Evo IX (ninth generation) was introduced in 2005, featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 287 hp (214 kW / 291 PS). While the rally-inspired sedan is undeniably fast in a straight line, its true advantage lies in its handling, which is aided by a sophisticated chassis and all-wheel-drive system.
The IX is widely regarded as one of the best Mitsubishi models ever produced, representing the peak evolution of the VII and VIII generations. It ceased production in 2007, when it was succeeded by the significantly redesigned EVO X—the final model of this iconic series.
