Florida troopers apprehended a 19-year-old after recording a speed of 154 mph.
The incident occurred on wet I-4 in Hillsborough County early on Sunday.
The teenager now faces charges under Florida's newly enacted Super Speeder law.
Although Florida's road design might appear to cater to drag racing enthusiasts, it doesn't make high speeds any less illegal. A teenager recently learned this lesson the hard way after allegedly being clocked at 154 mph (248 km/h). Police managed to catch up with him, stop the vehicle, and take him directly to jail.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, officers noticed a Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on I-4 in Hillsborough County around 1:30 a.m. The vehicle was already going approximately 95 mph, weaving through traffic and changing lanes without signaling. Things escalated when a trooper pulled behind the Mustang; instead of slowing down, the driver reportedly accelerated.
High-Speed Trouble
FHP indicated that the Mustang reached 154 mph, showcasing the driver's willingness to flee. The S550 Mustang he was driving has an electronically capped top speed of 155 mph. This means he was pushing the limits, yet police intercepted him anyway—not due to a crash or because “the radio was faster.”
It turned out that the pursuing officer also had a Mustang GT. According to Fox 13, the alleged speeder, a 19-year-old, pulled over once the trooper activated his lights.
Now, he faces charges of reckless driving and excessively dangerous speeding. Due to Florida’s Super Speeder law enacted last year, he risks up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both, and possibly more severe consequences if this isn't his first offense.
Public Reaction
While this level of speed is undoubtedly undesirable on public roads, the response to the Florida Highway Patrol's actions was mixed. Some individuals criticized slow drivers as equally hazardous.
“FHP should start stopping people who are driving 10-20 UNDER the speed limit. Statistics show that drivers significantly below the speed limit cause just as many accidents as those exceeding it,” argued one commenter.
Another suggested, “You all should implement a 'Slow Speeder' law and pull over those who hinder traffic by not moving out of the left lane… most traffic issues are due to human error.”
Others questioned the officer's judgment in pursuing the Mustang. “For a speed like that, a helicopter should have been deployed. If the officer exceeded 160 to chase him down, he should be taken off the road. We don't need two reckless drivers on the highway.”
In summary, while the teen's case may seem straightforward, the public discourse surrounding policing methods remains a topic of contention.
