If your primary concern is considerable power, the Shelby Super Snake R is a notable bargain. Priced from $224,995, it is nearly $100,000 less than a Ford Mustang GTD, which, despite its impressive road course performance, only produces 815 horsepower compared to the Shelby’s 850 hp. If that difference works for you, we have some exciting news.
Shelby American has just unveiled the 2026 Shelby Super Snake—without the “R” designation. This model starts at $175,885 and can achieve 830 hp when equipped with the optional Whipple supercharger on its Coyote 5.0-liter V8 engine. Notably, this power is available using 93-octane fuel instead of E85 or any other special blend. Opting for natural aspiration gives the Super Snake the same 480 hp as the Ford Mustang GT on which it is based. That’s not particularly impressive.
Customers who choose not to include the supercharger (available only as a post-title installation) will still benefit from many of the same design elements found in the full Super Snake R. These include a widebody design with carbon fiber fenders and aerodynamic enhancements such as a lower diffuser and splitter wickers. The aluminum hood features carbon fiber vents, along with vents in the front fenders to assist with cooling airflow.
Regarding cooling, the Super Snake is equipped with a more robust cooling system featuring a Shelby-specific radiator and heat exchanger. Enhancements also extend to the brake rotors and suspension, while the Super Snake rides on 20-inch forged magnesium wheels to reduce unsprung weight. Shelby will produce models with either the six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmissions found in the standard Mustang GT, available in both coupe and convertible variants.
As is typical with Shelby, the car features numerous logos and badges. You will see Shelby and/or Super Snake markings on the puddle lights, door sill plates, seats, and the ball knob on manual transmission vehicles. Additionally, there’s a serialized dash plaque and engine plaque that authenticates the vehicle as a Shelby American creation. Each of the 300 Super Snakes planned for the 2026 model year will be recorded in the official Shelby Registry, which tracks all Shelby vehicles back to the original Cobras.
While it may not be the most powerful option in Shelby’s lineup, the Super Snake still surpasses the Mustang GTD, and it is priced lower than its Super Snake R counterpart. With over 800 hp, a decrease of 20 hp for a $50,000 savings is a reasonable deal. For those interested in tire-smoking performance cars, it’s quite practical.
