The revised midsize performance SUV features a larger grille and new headlights as its main highlights.

AMG is set to introduce an updated GLE 53 SUV for the 2027 model year.

The fourth-generation GLE’s update includes Mercedes’ star-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs).

Changes are underway in Mercedes’ design team, with longtime creative chief Gorden Wagener announcing his departure after nearly three decades with the company. However, we will continue to see his influence for a while, including on this refreshed AMG GLE 53.

Slated to debut in 2026 for the MY27 lineup, this sporty midsize SUV can trace its lineage back to the fourth-generation GLE's launch in 2018, with the AMG 53 model made public a year later.

The GLE Mk4 has already seen one refresh in 2023, but with age and the need to remain competitive with newer Mercedes models, it’s time for another series of updates for both the traditional SUV and its coupe variant.

One of the most noticeable changes when it appears in late 2027 will be the star-shaped DRLs being rolled out across the Mercedes and AMG portfolios. These lights first appeared on the back of the E-Class and are now being featured on both ends of new vehicles during facelifts.

The new grille will be prominently placed between the front DRLs and, although it is camouflaged in these images, it is expected to be significantly larger than the current GLE’s grille, potentially taking cues from the grille design of the newly unveiled electric GLC with EQ Technology in September.

In addition to its increased size, the new grille will have a frame, which is currently absent from both the Mercedes and AMG variants of the GLE. Changes to the bumpers and potentially new wheel designs are also expected, although the body panels will remain the same since this is merely a facelift.

Regarding performance, the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter inline six engine currently in the GLE 53 is likely to carry over with minimal alterations. It presently delivers 429 hp (435 PS), but AMG engineers will likely extract a bit more power ahead of the 2026 debut. They will need to utilize every strategy to divert attention from the upcoming G65-code BMW X5, also set to launch in 2026 for the MY27 lineup. With BMW's contemporary Neue Klasse design language and exciting M60 performance variant in development, the new X5 poses a threat to make the aging GLE appear outdated.
