A Toyota Yaris, in a race against a motorcycle, collides with a Yukon on urban streets.
As the Yaris loses body parts and its spoiler, it attempts to escape.
Police quickly chase down the vehicle and arrest the driver following the accident.
Sometimes, a single poor choice leads to a series of unfortunate events, spiraling into severe repercussions. This weekend, we have a first-person account of such a scenario.
A driver of a Toyota Yaris, equipped with an aftermarket hood scoop and spoiler, believed they could mimic racing behavior on a public roadway. Not only did they face immediate consequences, but they probably encountered more than they anticipated.

Our footage was recorded on Mercury Blvd in Hampton, Virginia. This isn’t an interstate, but a busy multi-lane road filled with traffic lights, cross traffic, and regular drivers aiming to reach their destinations safely.
Naturally, this is perhaps the worst environment for any kind of racing. Moreover, it was around 2 p.m., with the supposed competitor being a motorcycle, and traffic was relatively heavy.

In our video, the owner of the dashcam, a Reddit user, is in lane two of the four-lane road when the Yaris races into lane three at a significantly higher speed than the surrounding traffic. “I was going 40-45 mph when they sped past me, so likely 60 mph or more,” states the driver.
As the Yaris approaches and overtakes our camera vehicle, the driver abruptly cuts into lane two, immediately losing control.
The rear of the Yaris veers left; the driver tries to regain control, and the back swings out to the right before colliding with a GMC Yukon in lane three. The damage to the Toyota is severe. The rear window shatters, the back bumper flies off, the trunk collapses, and the large spoiler attached to the trunk is dislodged.

Next comes the attempt to flee. Instead of stopping, the Yaris limps away and turns down a side street. Unfortunately for the driver, a police officer appears almost instantly in the dashcam’s rearview mirror and follows the same turn. As it turns out, that street was a dead end.
The original poster reported that the driver was captured and taken to jail within hours. Possible charges include felony evasion, as the officer allegedly entered the roadway with lights on before the Yaris left. Even more concerning, there were reportedly two adults and two children inside the Yaris at the time of the crash.
Racing is already perilous enough on actual racetracks. Doing so in traffic, in a Toyota Yaris, with children in the vehicle, and a police officer in close proximity? That's not confidence; it's a blatant display of poor judgment. We are just glad everyone emerged without injuries, aside from the Yaris itself.
