The forthcoming special edition is set to blend exclusivity with performance.

Mercedes has unveiled a prototype of the new G-Class Cabriolet for testing, which foreshadows an upcoming special edition featuring a soft top. Testing has just commenced, but familiar engine options are anticipated.

The promotional campaign for the Mercedes G-Class Cabrio is gaining momentum, as the company has introduced a prototype. This is one of several undergoing “rigorous testing” worldwide.

As expected, the initial tests are occurring in Austria, where the G-Class is manufactured by Magna Steyr. While the company has not provided extensive details, they noted that “engineers are collecting comprehensive data to guarantee the open-top model offers a distinct and unparalleled G‑Class experience.”

After the first testing phase, the SUV is set to move to Sweden for cold weather trials. This will assess the model's “rugged capability, driving dynamics, and reliability” in low temperatures, which will also test the effectiveness of the soft top.

In terms of design, the prototype features a retractable roof with a relatively small rear window. Additionally, the third brake light has been repositioned to the spare tire carrier, centered in the middle of the window.

Furthermore, there is a thicker C-pillar and a black strip that separates the body from the roof. We may also expect to see added bracing and a slightly updated interior including convertible-specific controls and possibly Airscarf seating.

Engine options are likely to mirror those of the standard model, suggesting a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque. Additionally, there could be a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 generating 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm) of torque.

More information will be revealed in the coming months, but Mercedes has referred to the G‑Class Cabriolet as a “special edition,” indicating that production will be limited and prices will be significantly high.
