The 2026 Subaru Outback has just been released, so you can expect to see its striking design at campgrounds soon. Before you decide to purchase one and start loading items onto its sturdy roof rack, here’s a brief overview of its carrying capacity.
The new Outback features three roof rack weight specifications:
- Static Load: 800 Pounds
- Dynamic Load: 220 Pounds
- Lateral Load: 220 Pounds
This indicates that the rack can support 800 pounds while parked, 220 pounds while in motion, and 220 pounds from the side while stationary (such as when holding a hammock or a large awning).
The new Outback also includes a few playful easter eggs within the plastic, such as small icons representing items you may want to place on the roof.
Each roof rack is assigned individual static and dynamic load ratings, with static ratings generally being much higher. While it’s uncommon for manufacturers to provide a specific rating for side loads, it’s noteworthy. This is crucial information, especially if you’re planning to set up a hammock on the side of your Outback; it’s advisable to avoid overloading it with more than one adult!
The significant difference between static and dynamic load ratings is due to physical principles. Driving with 800 pounds overhead acts like a lever, causing the car to tilt as it moves (although it would likely detach the rack well before rollover risks became significant).
Why have different specifications? Roof tents and standing platforms illustrate this well. If you were to have a crossbar-based platform installed on the roof, you could safely accommodate two people standing on it for photography, event observation, or similar activities without causing damage.

Hopefully, this clarifies any confusion regarding the Outback's rack and helps prevent someone from exceeding the load limits on their new Subaru.
