Tesla plans to secure the Cybertruck’s light bar using bolts instead of adhesive.
Over 6,000 Cybertrucks have been recalled because the light bars detached while driving.
Owners will receive notifications by December 26, with repairs anticipated to begin in early 2026.
Sometimes, the solution is surprisingly simple, especially when the initial fix relied on nothing more than strong glue and hope. Tesla has revealed how it plans to prevent the optional off-road light bar of the Cybertruck from falling off.
Rather than depending on adhesive, which has proven ineffective over time, the company will now mount the light bar to the roof using actual bolts.
Last month, Tesla announced the recall of 6,197 Cybertrucks due to the optional LED light bar being solely secured by adhesive.
As expected, several light bars failed to remain attached, detaching from vehicles while on the road. The problem arose from issues with the adhesive primers used during installation. Up to this point, Tesla has recorded 619 warranty claims regarding the light bar coming loose.
Bolts Are Certainly Better Than Adhesive
At least Tesla has now found a practicable solution. The company has created a new steel bracket that secures both sides of the light bar.
This bracket then fits between the stainless steel window frames of the Cybertruck and includes a small component that bolts directly into the vehicle’s roof.
Although Tesla has devised the fix, it is not yet prepared to begin repairs on customer vehicles. According to the initial recall notice, owners won’t receive official notifications until December 26, indicating that service appointments are unlikely to start until early 2026.
If you own a Cybertruck with a light bar only affixed with adhesive, it may be wise to limit your use of the vehicle. Alternatively, if you need to drive it before booking an appointment at your local Tesla service center, using duct tape to temporarily secure the light bar might be a sensible option.
A Persistent Problem
The off-road light bar has been a point of frustration for owners since the Cybertruck's launch in late 2023. Customers who paid extra for the Foundation Series version of the electric pickup expected to receive the light bar as standard. However, most trucks were delivered without it due to Tesla still finalizing the accessory.
By August, the delays had become significant enough that one owner decided to take legal action and sued Tesla in California.
