Toyota's twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V6 engine continues to present significant issues for both the manufacturer and truck owners. Last July, the company recalled over 100,000 Tundra and Lexus LX gas-only models equipped with this engine, agreeing to replace all of them due to machining debris remaining inside the engines. Now, approximately 16 months later, an additional 127,000 units manufactured between December 2022 and February 2024 are being recalled for the same issue.
The engine recall 25TA14 covers 2022-2024 Toyota Tundras, Lexus LXs, and 2024 Lexus GX SUVs. The debris from machining could lead to engine knocking, rough operation, starting issues, and unexpected power loss. This situation is already familiar to late-model Tundra owners, who have seen extensive reports and discussions about these problems since early last year.
The 2024 Lexus GX is also part of this recall. Toyota states that they are currently working on a solution to this problem, but it may involve more long-block replacements. Previously, the recall remedy involved dealer technicians completely disassembling the engine and replacing the affected parts. Short-block rebuilds remain the solution for Tundra hybrid owners who have encountered engine failures.
Notably, Toyota has not included hybrid models with the same V6 in these wide-ranging recalls, reportedly because their electric drive system may enable them to maneuver off the road in case of a malfunction. These recalls are voluntary safety measures, and thus far, the NHTSA has not compelled Toyota to add the electrified trucks to the recall list.
Affected owners will receive notification from Toyota regarding the recall by early January 2026. However, several individuals have already reported being able to see the recall information through their Toyota app.
