Cybertruck Owner Experienced a $76,500 Depreciation Loss After Only 4,600 Miles | Carscoops
A Tesla Cybertruck took a significant hit on an online auction platform.
The electric vehicle, which has 5,200 miles on it, sold for only $70,000 months after fetching $147,000.
This particular model is a limited edition Foundation Series featuring a 600 hp all-wheel-drive setup.
A 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Foundation Series recently sold for $70,000 on Cars&Bids with only 5,200 miles (8,400 km) on the odometer. While this may seem like a fantastic price for one of the most anticipated vehicles of the decade, it's disappointing for the seller.
The same Cybertruck was sold on the same auction site last year for $146,500 when it had only 600 miles (970 km) on it, indicating that it has depreciated more than half its value in under 18 months.
It remains unclear whether the initial owner paid the standard price or a $50,000 markup, as some observers indicated at the time, but the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) was $101,995.
The Foundation Series was Tesla's first edition Cybertruck, a limited-run variant that began production in late 2023. It came packed with luxury features and included various unique badges and trim elements, such as sill inserts.
The initial models were exclusively available to early reservation holders and were anticipated to become collector’s items. However, the situation has clearly changed since then. The new owner of this specific dual-motor, 600 hp (608 PS / 447 kW) truck has secured one of the best bargains in recent electric vehicle history.
The sale price of $70,000 is below Tesla's base MSRP of $79,990 for a new dual-motor all-wheel-drive Cybertruck and highlights the significant decline in values since the initial excitement surrounding the launch of the electric truck. This drop in price is not isolated; used Cybertruck values have generally decreased throughout 2025.
Reasons for the Collapse
Several factors contributed to this drop. Early buyers were willing to pay exorbitant prices to be first, relying on exclusivity and hype, but that excitement quickly diminished as more Cybertrucks became available and real-world impressions flooded social media.
The initial rarity that led to those six-figure auction prices has diminished as production increased and delivery numbers rose. Coupled with a shifting second-hand electric vehicle market and heightened competition from manufacturers like Ford, Rivian, and GM, the drop in resale values is easily understood.
Even the Foundation Series edition couldn’t prevent depreciation, nor could the modifications the owner made, such as an expensive black wrap, black-painted lower body trim, and 24-inch T Sportline CTM Monoblock forged wheels costing $10,000, according to the invoice.
Despite its cutting-edge design and attention-grabbing performance, the market for Elon Musk’s electric truck is following the typical trend: initial excitement followed by a sharp correction. For those still aspiring to own one, now may be an opportune moment to purchase. The Cybertruck still attracts attention, but its previously high resale value has undoubtedly diminished, leading to some excellent deals for buyers looking to make a purchase.
