100 Individuals Assault Police Vehicles as Street Takeover Escalates Uncontrollably | Carscoops
Police were overwhelmed when more than 100 individuals attacked cruisers during a violent street takeover, resulting in one cruiser being set on fire and leaving officers outraged.
A crowd of over 100 assaulted Boston police vehicles during a street takeover event, causing one police car to ignite as fireworks and poles were thrown at the officers.
Two men from Rhode Island were apprehended as officials promised stricter laws and enforcement actions.
Street takeovers are notoriously reckless events that often border on disaster. Crowds obstruct intersections, cars spin out in smoke, and sometimes the situation escalates to dangerous levels, causing collisions or worse for both spectators and drivers. It's particularly unusual for a takeover to culminate with a police vehicle being set ablaze.
This precisely occurred just a few nights ago in Boston. Police are still investigating what they characterize as a “violent crowd” that turned against officers, throwing poles and fireworks amid the chaos.
A Sudden Escalation
Officials reported that the incident began around 2 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Tremont Street. Upon police arrival, a large sideshow was obstructing traffic, with many vehicles amidst a gathering of spectators. The situation quickly deteriorated.
Witnesses and police accounts indicate that members of the crowd surrounded and assaulted the cruisers. Some struck the vehicles with poles while others discharged fireworks in their direction.
Amid the turmoil, one police car from Boston became engulfed in flames, prompting firefighters to step in as officers attempted to disperse the crowd. The vehicle was completely destroyed. However, law enforcement did not leave empty-handed.
One Cruiser Lost, Two Arrests Made
Julian Bowers, 18, and William Cantwell, 19, both from Rhode Island, were taken back to the station and charged with malicious destruction of property, assault and battery against a police officer, and resisting arrest.
To exacerbate the situation, police allege that Cantwell also had marijuana edibles in his possession at the scene.
“I want to express my gratitude to our Boston Police officers and first responders for their efforts last night,” Mayor Michelle Wu told NBC Boston.
“The outsiders who disrupted Boston with their dangerous behavior will be prosecuted and held accountable for their actions. These groups are not welcome here and will face serious consequences,” she emphasized.
A Spreading Trend
The tumult in Boston was not an isolated event. Just 45 minutes earlier, police in Randolph reported a similar situation, where vehicles blocked Route 28, reflecting what authorities identify as a growing and increasingly perilous trend spreading throughout Massachusetts.
