A Subaru Forester ended up in a lake in Massachusetts during an incident involving ICE arrests.
Reportedly, officers were nearby apprehending an alleged illegal immigrant.
If the engine had been off, the SUV might still be salvageable mechanically.
Subarus are known for their ability to handle rugged terrain, but this Forester encountered a situation well beyond its intended purpose when it rolled into a Massachusetts lake. The cause of this mishap, as per reports, was something much more mundane than a mechanical failure: the driver simply forgot to shift it into park.
Witnesses indicated that the unidentified woman driving the Subaru was distracted as agents from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were making an arrest in the vicinity. Amidst the chaos, the Subaru was left unsecured, leading to its unfortunate entry into the water.
From Chaos to Submersion
According to the New York Post, the woman was “yelling at agents” in Upton, Massachusetts, and in her distraction, she failed to shift into park or engage the parking brake. Images posted on X by a Fox News reporter showed the Forester partially submerged in the lake while the woman stood helplessly on the shore.
In the footage, the person recording can be heard commenting, “Well, that sucks. Look at that, Lucy. Her car got lost.”
An ICE source reported that the anti-ICE protester in Massachusetts inadvertently allowed her car to roll into a lake while she yelled at agents arresting an illegal immigrant.
The same source mentioned that the Forester “sunk,” but there are no images confirming it completely submerged. If that is accurate, it may be beyond rescue. However, if the Forester is in its current position, towing it out could be manageable.

If the engine was off when the Forester entered the water, significant mechanical damage may have been avoided. Modern cars can sometimes be restored after partial submersion if the electronics and lubrication systems are not compromised. For now, there have been no updates regarding the Subaru’s condition.
The Boston Herald reported that the woman received a citation from the Upton Police for unsafe vehicle operation.
At this time, there is no information indicating that the woman attempted to interfere with the arrest of the alleged illegal immigrant, nor is it clear what she communicated to the ICE agents.
