Estonian startup Velvet Motorworks is set to bring back the L322 Range Rover with a limited-series restomod.

This restomod blends retro design elements, a modernized interior, and enhanced mechanical features.

The first deliveries to customers are expected in late 2026, equipped with a supercharged V8 engine.

The third-generation Range Rover from the early 2000s continues to receive appreciation for its sleek lines and subtle luxury. Nearly 25 years later, Velvet Motorworks, a new company from Estonia, is planning a special limited-run revival tailored for buyers seeking something uniquely curated.

The L322 Range Rover made its debut in 2001, with updates introduced in 2006 and 2010. It was developed under BMW's oversight, although Ford had already acquired Land Rover when sales commenced.

Mihkel Külaots, founder of Velvet Motorworks, shared the reason for selecting this model for their inaugural project: “I was a teenager when the L322 was first released, and I distinctly recall my first impression of it. I was struck by the power and luxury of that distinctive vehicle. Now, with earlier versions over 20 years old, these cars deserve a comprehensive tear-down and rebuild, offering a bit of added character—not merely a restoration, but a revival of a modern classic.”

A Fresh Perspective on Classic Elements

This venture isn't just a typical restomod where a classic car is updated with modern technology and style. While it does involve that, it also introduces a more retro vision. Velvet Motorworks has opted for a nostalgic flair, incorporating design cues from the original model, while updating them as if the restomod were a unique creation. It might be a bit confusing, but the result is nonetheless cohesive.

Exterior modifications include custom LED lighting featuring round designs, a redesigned grille with vertical bars, and bumpers inspired by traditional off-road vehicles. The overall aesthetic is completed with larger wheels and a raised stance.

The company has not yet revealed images of the “handcrafted” interior, but assures that it will combine high-quality materials with modern features like Apple CarPlay and an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS).

Particular attention is given to the underlying mechanics, starting with a total restoration, followed by chassis and performance enhancements. The goal is to maintain an analog driving experience while enhancing comfort and handling.

All models will feature a supercharged 4.2-liter V8 gasoline engine sourced from Jaguar, originally delivering 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) straight from the factory. However, its output will be further boosted with additional hardware and software modifications. It will also be fitted with a selectable active exhaust for a more dynamic sound.

      From Concept to Limited Production

As you might have noticed, Velvet Motorworks’ Range Rover currently only exists in 3D renderings. These were created by CGI artist Nils Piirma, who has previously collaborated with Koenigsegg and Genesis. The company has committed to having the first prototype ready by mid-2026, with the first customer deliveries planned for the end of that year.

The limited production of the Range Rover L322 restomod will take place in Estonia, with each unit being custom-made. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed, but Velvet Motorworks is already taking expressions of interest.
