The more affordable Model Y will forgo many features to improve accessibility.

Tesla's entry-level Model Y eliminates the glass roof, ambient cabin lighting, and additional options.

The simpler design will include a fiberglass headliner, basic seating, and 18-inch wheels.

If priced around or below $35,000, it could become Tesla's most budget-friendly Model Y.

The highly anticipated budget model, expected to be a stripped-down version of the Model Y, is nearing production. After several camouflaged prototypes were seen during testing, a well-known Tesla software investigator has revealed crucial details embedded in the vehicle’s onboard code. These findings illustrate the extent of Tesla's efforts to reduce costs.

A well-known Tesla hacker, GreenTheOnly, who has a history of uncovering hidden features in the company’s software and apps, reports that the most noticeable change in this affordable Model Y will be the removal of the glass panoramic roof, replaced by a cheaper steel panel. The new roof will feature a simplified fiberglass headliner, and the updated Model Y's ambient lighting system will not be included.

      Essential Features Only

The coding also indicates that Tesla is reducing equipment in other areas. Features such as power-folding mirrors, puddle lamps, a second-row touchscreen, and even the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) will be eliminated. However, it seems unlikely that the TPMS will be completely removed, as it has been a federal requirement for all new U.S. vehicles since 2007. To further cut costs, Tesla is likely opting for more economical suspension parts, simpler seat controls, and basic 18-inch wheels.

The reversing camera heater will be removed, as will the central 'airwave' system, which likely means the vehicle will not include Tesla's unique air vent design. Two simplified audio system options will be available, representing a significant shift from the cabin technology found in the current model.

It’s important to note that these details are derived from code analysis and have not yet been officially verified.

On the exterior, the budget Model Y is expected to feature a different front end, setting it apart visually from the standard model.

      When Will It Launch?

Tesla has not yet announced a release date for this model. Some speculate it could debut in the fourth quarter, possibly first in China, before being rolled out in the U.S. and other global markets.

The success of this stripped-down Model Y will largely depend on its price. Currently, in the U.S., the Model Y starts at $44,990, not including the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which will be eliminated next week. A price around $35,000 or lower may be crucial for Tesla if it wants the simplified version to gain popularity.
