We've all heard the catchy phrases before. “Click it or ticket” is one of them, as is “Drive sober or get pulled over.” However, it seems police might need a new slogan to deter people from street takeovers. For now, the highly publicized destruction of a Dodge Durango Hellcat will suffice.
On Wednesday afternoon, Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul L Humphrey and Mayor Craig Greenberg staged a public relations event. They hosted a live session on Facebook and welcomed local media to a news conference, where they discussed the government's firm stance against street racing.
“This is a message to those wanting to engage in this hazardous activity,” LMPD Chief Humphrey stated. “We will not accept it on the streets of Louisville.”
Humphrey expressed that he “would have liked to integrate this car into the fleet if it had been street legal.” Unfortunately, it contained stolen parts from several vehicles. However, the owner was not charged, as they reportedly did not know about its questionable background. This specific Durango Hellcat was seized during last year's Street Rod Nationals event and has been in LMPD's custody for some time.
Out of 167 vehicles LMPD has confiscated for street racing and takeovers in 2023, four have been auctioned off. Humphrey clarified that the funds from these auctions went directly to the department. As of now, none have been added to the fleet, but that possibility is being considered for the future.
“When we receive reports of illegal street racing or takeovers anywhere in our city, LMPD intervenes and puts a stop to it,” Mayor Greenberg declared. He then highlighted the case of Myrtle Wacker, a 77-year-old who was killed by a street racer in October 2024. In that incident, a Ford Mustang driver was racing a BMW at 120 miles per hour when it struck Wacker and her husband, a 74-year-old who was severely injured.
Mayor Greenberg then pressed the button to determine the fate of the 710-horsepower SUV.
