Weeds Consume Abandoned Porsche in a Scene Reminiscent of The Last of Us | Carscoops

      Nature has taken over a neglected Porsche 911 in the Netherlands, with residents stating it has remained undisturbed for over a year.

      A Porsche 996 Cabriolet has been parked in Amsterdam without being moved for more than a year.

      Despite the disregard, its parking permit is current, which has prevented authorities from towing the vehicle.

      Locals speculate that the owner may be missing, incarcerated, or residing abroad.

      Resembling a prop from The Last of Us, this Porsche 911 Cabriolet is gradually being overrun by the weeds of Amsterdam. It is not an artificial creation or a scene from a dystopian movie, but a real vehicle that seems to have remained in its parking spot for over a year.

      Despite the encroaching vegetation, the black 996 Porsche 911 still appears quite presentable, with its paint in surprisingly good condition. The only noticeable damage is a significant dent in the rear bumper, suggesting a careless bump or someone playing around with a shopping cart.

      A Sports Car in Limbo

      Business cards from eager dealers are wedged against the windows, each offering to take the car off the owner's hands. It’s reported that its roadworthiness certificate expired last year, yet the parking permit is still valid, which explains why authorities haven't removed the vehicle.

      Residents have been aware of the neglected Porsche for a while. A resident told Dutch outlet NH Nieuws that after moving into his apartment across the street about 15 months ago, he has never seen the car touched or moved. “It’s always there,” he remarked. “It’s strange. I’ve never seen anyone near it. It hasn’t been moved. I have no idea what's happening.”

      Google Maps imagery captures the same Porsche parked in the same spot back in May 2024, showing it in better condition at that time. Speculations about the missing owner vary from being away on travel to imprisonment, which could explain their prolonged absence. Even the dealer who sold the 911 to the current owner is clueless about their whereabouts, as their phone is no longer operational.

      The Porsche 996 is regarded as one of the more controversial generations of the 911, mainly due to its “fried egg” headlights and the introduction of a water-cooled engine. The model was unveiled in 1997 and continued production until 2004. The displayed 996 is a revised Carrera Convertible.

      From Luxury To Uncertainty

      An online license plate database reveals that this 911 was first registered in 2003, originally priced at €124,446, which is around $146,900 today. Currently, dealers estimate it could sell for €20,000 to €25,000 ($23,600 to $29,500), but only if someone is willing to invest the time and effort to restore it properly.

      For the time being, the abandoned Porsche remains an unresolved dusty mystery in Amsterdam. Whether its owner will eventually return to retrieve it, or it will be sold and restored by someone else, the car's story is far from over.
