The single-motor variation of the Cybertruck offered a driving range of 350 miles.
Recently, it was noted that the Cybertruck Long Range RWD initially debuted with a base price of $69,990. The base model also omitted the powered tonneau cover found in other variants.
Tesla did not provide any explanation for this change, but it’s likely that poor sales contributed to the model's discontinuation.
Tesla has a tendency to launch entry-level models at comparatively lower prices, only to remove them from the lineup unexpectedly. This was the case with the Cybertruck, as the company has eliminated the rear-wheel-drive variant that previously served as the introductory model for the pickup.
This adjustment was reflected on Tesla’s online configurator, where the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model is now absent. Once starting at $69,990, it was the least expensive Cybertruck available. With its elimination, the range now initiates at $79,990 for the All-Wheel Drive and peaks at $114,990 for the Cyberbeast. Notably, when it was first revealed in late 2019, Tesla stated that the electric pickup truck would start at just $39,900—a claim that proved to be significantly inaccurate.
If we were to speculate, it seems likely that there was insufficient demand for Tesla to continue producing the most basic version of the Cybertruck. This model not only featured a single electric motor compared to the dual and tri-motor configurations of the All-Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast, but it also lacked 120V/240V outlets and a powered tonneau cover.
The drawbacks extended further. The Rear-Wheel Drive variant included a seven-speaker audio system instead of the 15-speaker setup found in other models, had textile seating instead of leather, and omitted a rear touchscreen.
Prospective buyers interested in the single-motor Cybertruck will now need to explore the used car market, or alternatively, spend an additional $10,000 to acquire the All-Wheel Drive version.
Interestingly, Tesla had only launched the Cybertruck Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive in April. Although it did not possess the same off-road capabilities as the All-Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast, it did offer the highest driving range of any model, enabling travel up to 350 miles (563 km) on a single charge.
However, its towing capacity was decreased from 11,000 lbs (4,989 kg) to 7,500 lbs (3,401 kg), and the payload dropped from 2,500 lbs (1,133 kg) in the All-Wheel Drive to 2,006 lbs (910 kg). These limitations may have influenced buyers to opt for more premium variants instead of the entry-level model, ultimately resulting in its discontinuation.
