The V8 Dodge Durango is making a comeback, replacing the standard V6. However, its reintroduction may vary based on your location. Every 2026 Durango will feature a 5.7-liter Hemi engine producing 360 horsepower, but recent dealer communications indicate that SUVs with the more powerful 392 and Hellcat engines will only be available in states that do not adhere to California’s emissions regulations.

This update comes from MoparInsiders, who reportedly reached out to Stellantis regarding the dealer communications and received this statement: “The HEMI-powered Durango R/T 392 and the Durango SRT HELLCAT are available in non-CARB states. We are continuously assessing the possibility of providing the full V8-powered Durango lineup to all customers.” The Drive has also contacted the automaker and will provide updates if new information emerges.

If Stellantis chooses not to sell these more powerful Durangos in the 17 states following California’s Air Resources Board guidelines, it wouldn't be surprising. The automaker has previously only offered electrified versions of certain Jeep models in CARB-compliant states like Delaware, Colorado, and Oregon in 2023, requiring gas-powered vehicles to be special-ordered.

This situation also led Stellantis to contest how CARB evaluated their compliance with regulations, especially in comparison to treatment of other manufacturers. It has been a complicated issue, but ultimately, the two sides reached an agreement a little over a year ago, in which Stellantis committed to following California’s regulations, supposedly regardless of future federal government actions.

Nevertheless, the outcome appears to be a familiar predicament: the least fuel-efficient versions of Dodge’s SUVs may not be accessible in states with the strictest emissions standards, at least until Dodge's “evaluations” yield positive results. Last month, order books opened for the 2026 Durango Hellcat and its customizable Jailbreak variant.

The comeback of the Hemi V8 Dodge Durango might come with a caveat in states with more stringent emissions regulations.
