Drivers Report That Ford's V8 Consumes Oil More Quickly Than Gasoline | Carscoops
A recent lawsuit accuses Ford of concealing excessive oil consumption issues in its V8 pickups, leading to claims of engine damage and potential legal consequences.
The lawsuit asserts that Ford's 5.0-liter V8 engine consumes an excessive amount of oil, adversely affecting performance. Plaintiffs allege that the company was aware of this defect yet failed to issue recalls.
Moreover, the F-150 owner's manual reportedly contains errors regarding oil consumption and maintenance intervals.
Concerns regarding engine reliability have emerged for Ford F-150 owners who claim their trucks are utilizing significantly more oil than expected. A new class action lawsuit filed in Michigan unites drivers from nine states, all pointing to the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine as the culprit.
The complaint argues that the high oil consumption not only diminishes fuel efficiency but also negatively impacts performance and could potentially cause long-term engine damage.
According to the lawsuit, the owner's manual of the F-150 inaccurately describes the amount of oil required and how often it needs to be replenished. It also highlights that the truck's intelligent oil life monitor, meant to alert drivers when an oil change is due, could activate as early as 3,000 miles (4,800 km) following a previous oil change.
The issues extend beyond the inconvenience of frequent oil top-offs and changes. Owners also claim that the engine oil control system fails to function correctly, allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber, where it is burned off instead of lubricating the engine. This not only impacts efficiency and performance but also causes the formation of carbon deposits, which may harm the engine.
As reported by CarComplaints, the lawsuit alleges that Ford has been aware of the excessive oil consumption issue for a considerable time but has hidden this defect from customers and has not issued any recalls for the affected vehicles. The suit further claims that some dealerships have refused to repair the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engines, even while the vehicles remained under warranty.
Currently, the case lists 12 plaintiffs, all owners of 2018, 2019, or 2020 F-150 models. Among the class action representatives are drivers from Connecticut, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky, California, and Florida. Together, they contend that Ford should be held responsible for engines that consume oil at rates significantly above what is considered acceptable for a modern pickup truck.
