Sim racing is a serious endeavor, especially for those who participate competitively or who practice outside of actual racing. Often, these groups overlap. Therefore, it makes sense that their tools should match their needs, which is why the recent announcement of iRacing's technical partnership with Cosworth caught my eye. In short, this collaboration will provide iRacers with complimentary access to input their telemetry data into Cosworth’s Pi Toolbox software, already utilized by professional racing teams to analyze and improve their on-track performance.
A forthcoming version of the Pi Toolbox will be able to read the “.IBT” data files generated by the simulator, as stated in an iRacing press release. The two entities promote a “seamless integration” of Cosworth’s telemetry tools within the iRacing platform; they also offer custom, pre-built workbooks within Pi Toolbox designed for iRacing and beginners, as well as live remote telemetry, enabling spotters and teammates to monitor your data during sessions and provide real-time feedback over communications. At least until you decide to silence them.
While third-party software currently provides some of these functionalities, a deeper, native integration with iRacing is likely to enhance the capabilities of Pi Toolbox. Drivers could potentially compare their analytics from the simulator against corresponding data from an actual race car equipped with Cosworth’s technology, all through the same application. It’s worth noting that Pi is utilized at the highest levels of motorsport—yes, including F1.
Many developers in this field often claim to have developed their simulations through technical alliances with teams and suppliers, but the partnership between iRacing and Cosworth takes a more functional approach from the opposite side of the equation. Naturally, this initiative will likely lead to significant Cosworth branding across all iRacing Studios games. Nonetheless, it seems to affirm iRacing’s authenticity by allowing it to integrate with the same software employed by professionals in motorsport.
According to iRacing, members should be able to start exploring Pi Toolbox on September 16.
