Nissan's Compact Kei Car Conceals an Unexpected Surprise Within Its Small, Boxy Frame | Carscoops
Nissan has updated its Roox, exclusively for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), with several stylistic enhancements and additional technological and safety features.
The reimagined Roox offers an extra 4.5 inches of cabin space, enhancing overall comfort.
It includes a sizable 12.3-inch infotainment screen, the largest ever found in a Kei car.
Pricing begins at ¥1.6 million ($10,760) and there are 17 color options, including six two-tone variants.
Nissan has introduced the fourth generation of the Roox Kei car, featuring a refreshed appearance and numerous new functionalities. Although the Roox is available solely in Japan, its charming and boxy design is likely to attract foreign Kei car enthusiasts.
Similar to many Kei cars, the new Roox is designed to maximize interior space while adhering to local size regulations for these compact vehicles. While it maintains a familiar overall silhouette from the previous model, Nissan has completely redesigned the front, incorporating new headlights and a continuous LED light bar.
The same innovative approach continues along the sides. Although the bodywork is entirely new, the Roox retains sliding rear doors—a practical feature inherited from the earlier version.
**More Room, Smarter Design**
Nissan has extended the cabin by 4.5 inches (115 mm), ensuring it can comfortably seat four adults. The rear seats can slide up to 12.5 inches (320 mm) to enhance practicality, and the cargo space can now accommodate up to four 48-liter suitcases. Additionally, this iteration boasts the most advanced technology ever seen in a Roox.
The interior is equipped with a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen, marking the largest display in any Kei car produced by any manufacturer. Furthermore, it features an Intelligent Around View Monitor with an Invisible Hood View, offering the driver a virtual perspective through the engine compartment for easier hazard detection.
**Loaded with Safety Technology**
The Roox also includes a standard 3D view system and is equipped with the Nissan ProPILOT system, along with Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Consumers will have plenty of customization options, with 17 available paint finishes, featuring six two-tone and seven solid options in both the Standard trim and the sportier Highway STAR version.
Prices for the updated Roox will commence at 1.6 million yen ($10,760). While detailed technical specifications will be revealed shortly, it is expected to maintain the same 658 cc engine, which generates 52 hp and 44 lb-ft (60 Nm) of torque.
