The vehicles might have a pinched cable that hinders the tire pressure monitoring system from functioning properly.
Jeep is recalling nearly 80,000 Wranglers because of an issue with the tire pressure monitoring system.
These SUVs contain a cable that can be pinched, which stops the system from working effectively.
The issue was identified as a result of an assembly problem, and the cable will be replaced if necessary.
It's common to reduce tire pressure while off-roading, so it’s somewhat worrisome that many Jeep Wranglers might have a tire pressure monitoring system that doesn't adequately alert drivers. Specifically, the presence of a cable that can be pinched means the warning light might not activate as it should.
As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, FCA US initiated an investigation last October to determine why tire pressure warning lights were activating in certain Wranglers. This inquiry lasted several months, but in July of this year, they finally pinpointed a "build issue" that could cause a pinched cable.
Digging deeper, it was found that the remote start antenna cable can get pinched beneath the left rear seat belt retractor bracket, which may lead to the system failing to detect low tire pressures. If this happens, the tire pressure warning light will turn on.
Jeep has opted to issue a recall, affecting 78,989 Wranglers from the 2024 and 2025 model years. Nevertheless, Jeep estimates that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles have this defect, amounting to approximately 790 units.
As part of the recall process, owners will be advised to bring their vehicles to a dealership. At the dealership, a technician will examine the remote start antenna cable and replace it if needed.
Owner notifications are anticipated to be sent out early next month, but the notice to dealerships indicates that a remedy is not yet available.
