When I picture the Nissan Xterra SUV, I envision it in bright yellow, soaring over dunes as I “drove” it in 4×4 Evo on the Sega Dreamcast. I wasn't of driving age when this popular off-roader was first launched, but a recent report suggests that I might get to drive one in the near future.

As reported by Automotive News, the Japanese automaker announced at its national dealer meeting in Las Vegas on Wednesday that the Xterra and Pathfinder will once again be part of Nissan's lineup. The Xterra was portrayed as a “rugged, affordable midsize SUV” expected to be available for purchase in 2028.

Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier reportedly showcased images of a design study by the manufacturer, hinting at a boxy, adventure-ready SUV featuring an “upright grille and squarish headlights.” The report states that these designs are linked to new, forthcoming body-on-frame models, including the Xterra, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 SUVs, as well as the Frontier pickup truck.

“We are intensely focused on product [and] we are just beginning,” Meunier stated to the attendees, according to AN. “We have improved our planning to ensure the right vehicles are in the right places.”

Specific details about individual vehicles were not disclosed, but the report claims the upcoming Xterra is anticipated to come with a hybrid V6 engine featuring a range extender that allows for 75 miles of electric-only driving. These vehicles are likely to be manufactured at the automaker’s factory in Canton, Mississippi, where the Frontier is currently produced.

The annual meeting, attended by new Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa and featuring 2,500 guests, also outlined other future plans from the automaker, including a Skyline-based Infiniti sedan with a manual transmission, an electrified Rogue crossover, and various updates throughout the Nissan and Infiniti range.

After enduring years of declining sales and a failed merger with Honda, Nissan will do everything possible to maintain the support of dealers and customers while hoping its revamped products can swiftly regain traction to prevent further losses.
