Why Didn't I Consider the Flip-Up Truck Bed Cap?

As a pickup enthusiast, I have a soft spot for a quality truck bed topper. I enjoy writing about impressive options whenever I can, whether it's a modern overlanding model that stands out or a custom, vintage-style creation that took over 100 hours to craft. I thought I’d encountered all there was to see until I came across the incredibly spacious Matrix toppers from Black River that flip up for convenient unloading. Why didn’t I think of that?

These toppers are available in various shapes and sizes, but regardless of which you choose, they are constructed from lightweight and durable .063 automotive-grade aluminum. The Matrix GT features the sleekest design, providing 105-120 cubic feet of storage with a lid that aligns with the truck's roof. Then there's the Matrix ST, which has the same capacity but boasts a more angular teardrop shape better suited for taller items like dirt bikes. Finally, the larger Matrix XL is compatible with HD pickups that have 6’9″ beds and offers 138 cubic feet of storage when closed.

It's hard to visualize how much cargo space that actually is without a comparison. For context, a new Ford Expedition with its rear seats folded down has 108.5 cubic feet of storage, whereas the long-wheelbase Max models reach a maximum of 123.1 cubic feet. The Matrix toppers provide roughly that amount, if not more, and the flip-up design allows for access to the cargo from all sides.

The overall design is impressively practical. The bed caps lock into place with your truck, and for added security, they lack side windows; the only glass is located at the rear and is tinted. Additionally, there’s a smoked third brake light. Struts positioned near the cab keep the lid open while you access the bed, and a pull strap makes it easy to lower it. Alternatively, you can opt for a power up-down kit for $995.

The Matrix GT and ST toppers weigh between 120 and 130 pounds, making them manageable to remove with assistance when needed. The Matrix XL, weighing in at 180 pounds, is heavier but features reinforced struts to prevent overworking them.

Quality truck bed toppers generally come at a cost, and the Matrix models are no exception. The GT and ST are priced at $4,195, while the XL is available for $5,195. They can fit virtually any modern pickup, but it's advisable to check Black River’s website to ensure compatibility with your truck. I can already tell you that if your Ram is equipped with a Ram Box, this topper will not fit.

It's a clever concept, one I somewhat wish I had thought of myself, not because I know how to manufacture such a product, but simply… you know… for the royalties.
