Dodge’s Overlooked Gullwing Charger Is Finally Emerging From Concealment | Carscoops
The Dodge Turbo Charger concept will be auctioned on September 21 after having served as a pace car in the 1980s.
This car boasts an aerodynamically enhanced design complemented by a turbocharged engine.
It was utilized as a pace car for the Indy World Series and made appearances at auto shows.
September will feature numerous prominent auctions as part of Monterey Car Week, with nearly 300 vehicles from the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum in Chicago being auctioned off. As the museum is closing permanently, all items will be sold without reserve.
The collection is quite diverse, featuring everything from a horse-drawn hearse to a 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8, along with a 1959 Goggomobil Dart Roadster and various models from American Bantam.
While there is something to appeal to all interests, one of the standout cars is the Dodge Turbo Charger concept. It presents a much sleeker appearance than the production version, highlighting an aerodynamic coupe design with a distinctive front featuring a sharper nose and covered headlights.
Further back, distinctive elements include gullwing doors, NACA ducts, and encased rear wheels, all culminating in a sleek rear design with a prominent wing and a wide diffuser.
In the interior, the concept includes 11 different gauges that nearly span the full width of the dashboard, with some likely positioned out of the driver's sight.
In keeping with its performance focus, the car features a roll cage, Recaro seats, RJS harnesses, and a five-speed manual transmission.
As for the powertrain, the car is said to have a turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, which anticipated the production engine that produced 142 hp (106 kW / 144 PS) and 160 lb-ft (217 Nm) of torque. Additionally, the concept was fitted with a modified suspension featuring specialized shocks, springs, and sway bars.
This coupe will be auctioned by Mecum and was used as a pace car during the PPG Indy Car World Series in the early 1980s. It's also reported to have been showcased at the Detroit and Chicago Auto Shows in 1982.
