Tesla Discreetly Discontinues Its Flagship Electric Vehicles in Europe Shortly After Their Update | Carscoops
In Europe, customers can now only purchase a Model S or Model X from existing inventory.
Tesla is removing the Model S and Model X from its vehicle offerings in Europe.
These two electric vehicles are now exclusively available in the United States and Canada.
It is uncertain whether Tesla intends to introduce replacements for these discontinued models.
Once prominent in Tesla's lineup, the Model S and Model X were instrumental in defining the premium electric vehicle market. With impressive performance and early innovations, they represented the forefront of Tesla's aspirations. However, consumer preferences evolve over time.
Following the launch of the more budget-friendly Model 3 and Model Y, interest in Tesla's larger and more expensive models began to decline. Currently, the combined sales of the Model S and X account for less than 3% of the company’s quarterly sales. Given this trend, the discontinuation of both models in Europe is not surprising.
In typical Tesla fashion, the company has not made a significant announcement regarding the discontinuation of these models; they have simply been removed from the new car configurator in Europe. Tesla is still actively selling Model Ss and Model Xs from its stock, but once these vehicles are sold out, they will no longer be available unless Tesla chooses to introduce new models.
Interestingly, it has been less than two months since Tesla made updates to the Model S and Model X, which included several exterior and interior modifications. Clearly, the company does not see the necessity to market the updated versions in Europe, as they will only be sold in the United States and Canada.
The updates made for the 2026 model year are relatively minimal but feature redesigned front and rear fascias for the premium Plaid models. Additionally, Tesla introduced a new color named Frost Blue, modified the suspension bushings, enhanced the Active Noise Cancellation system, and added customizable ambient lighting in the cabin.
It is uncertain how long Tesla intends to continue producing the Model S and Model X. As long as they remain profitable, they are likely to continue in North America, yet the long-term future appears unclear.
Looking ahead, it may be prudent for Tesla to consider replacing these two models with a new flagship sedan and a three-row SUV. While the Model S and Model X still serve as viable options for some buyers, they are beginning to show their age and face stiff competition from newer entrants in the market, particularly in the three-row electric SUV category.
