On the other hand, the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are achieving record highs throughout Europe.
In the first half of the year, a total of 9.1 million EVs and PHEVs were sold worldwide.
China maintains its lead with a remarkable 5.5 million sales.
In North America, sales have increased by only 3 percent, primarily due to a 20 percent decline in Canada.
The worldwide increase in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales is ongoing, but the situation varies by region. Year-to-date sales of EVs and PHEVs have risen in all major areas, and it seems likely that this momentum will persist into the second half of the year. However, with the U.S. EV tax credit set to expire in slightly over two months, uncertain times may lie ahead.
It has been reported that, during the first six months of this year, a total of 9.1 million EVs and PHEVs were sold globally. This marks a significant 28 percent increase compared to the first half of 2024, driven mainly by soaring demand for electric vehicles in China.
According to Rho Motion, this year, at least 5.5 million EVs and PHEVs have been sold in China. However, the analytic firm does not distinguish between the two categories, providing a combined figure without a breakdown of the types.
What is clear is that the surge in sales is not limited to China. In the first half of 2025, sales of EVs and PHEVs in Europe increased by 26 percent, reaching 2.0 million units. Sales in Germany, which had significantly dropped last year after the removal of incentives, have rebounded robustly this year, climbing 40 percent year-to-date. Recently announced new incentives for electric vehicles in Germany may further enhance this growth.
From January to May, sales of electrified vehicles also surged by 72 percent in Spain, 58 percent in Italy, and 32 percent in the UK.
In contrast, North America is lagging behind. Sales of EVs and PHEVs have only increased by 3 percent this year to around 900,000 units. Contrary to popular belief, this stagnation is not due to the U.S., but rather a result of approximately a 23 percent decline in Canada after the country halted EV subsidies earlier this year. In the U.S., sales have grown by 4 percent, while Mexico has seen a 20 percent increase.
With the $7,500 federal EV tax credit set to be eliminated in the U.S. on September 30, Rho Motion anticipates an increase in EV sales in the coming months, followed by a significant drop in the last quarter of the year.
