Sung Kang, recognized as “Han” from the Fast and Furious series (incidentally mentioned for the second time today), has just announced that he is developing a live-action drift movie titled Drifter, alongside several other notable figures from the automotive world. They plan to film part of it at a public drift event this summer.
There have been rumors circulating for years about Kang's drift movie; by 2023, it was suggested it would have an Initial D live-action style. However, it seems that may have just been how it was being presented to potential investors.
In an Instagram post made today, Kang was with Brian Scotto (co-founder of The Hoonigans) and Adam LZ (renowned American drifter and YouTuber) to reveal that they are working on a “real” drift movie, along with Rutledge Wood (former host of Top Gear USA) and James Pumphrey (a pioneer from Donut Media).
They will be filming at least part of it during the Legends Of Drift event happening next month (August 23-25) at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. The event itself released a statement with more details, which I've included here:
“Legends of Drift is more than just an event – it’s a live-action homage to drift culture, the car community, and cinematic storytelling. Taking over Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ on August 23–24, 2025, this two-day experience merges a real drift competition and car show (similar to what you’ve come to enjoy from the LZ World Tour events by Adam LZ & Drift Games) with the filming of DRIFTER — a passionate project overseen by Fast & Furious star Sung Kang.
Anticipate continuous tire-burning action, an impressive car show, thrilling battles, vendor booths, crowd giveaways, and much more. Some of the biggest names in drifting and car culture will be present: Adam LZ, Brian Scotto, James Pumphrey, Rutledge Wood, Dai Yoshihara, Chelsea DeNofa, Luke Fink, Dave Egan, Jarod DeAnda, Grant Anderson, Chris Rudnik, Nate Hamilton, and many more guests yet to be announced.”
If you grab your tickets and wave your arms like an inflatable figure outside a used car lot, you might just spot yourself in the audience when you go to see the movie! The emphasis on “authenticity” in the promotional video suggests that this won’t be purely fictional, but there could still be real stunts paired with a crafted narrative for dramatic effect. Regardless, I’m looking forward to it!
