Tesla has just refreshed its autonomous Robotaxi coverage map in Austin, Texas.
The service area bears similarities to that of its competitor Waymo but offers greater coverage.
Customers have observed what seems to be a deliberately unique shape to the map.
After a lengthy period of anticipation and considerable hype, the launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi did not unfold as dramatically as many had expected. Instead of numerous cars operating freely, only about 10 vehicles were seen, all monitored by human supervisors within a GPS-restricted zone. However, Tesla is making strides, beginning with an updated coverage map that has an unusual shape.
Those currently included in Tesla's Robotaxi Beta program should now see a new update in their Robotaxi app, labeled version 25.7.5 (6031), offering various enhancements. The update features walking directions to the pickup and final destination, allows customers to modify their destination after booking, and notifies customers if their destination is expected to close soon before arrival.
Interestingly, it also updates the coverage map, which has a rather peculiar appearance. Generally, maps don’t hold much significance beyond basic functionality, but this one has a comical shape resembling a ball-peen hammer, albeit with rounder edges. Many online have joked about its design, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to one comment with a simple Chef’s kiss meme.
It remains uncertain whether Musk had any influence on the shape or if it’s coincidental. Many aspects of Tesla are characterized by playful puns or references to other elements, like their model lineup—namely S, 3, X, and Y. Musk enjoys such connections, and this map certainly seems like something he might have requested, even if just for amusement. Regardless, the map appears quite functional and exemplifies Tesla's unique approach.
Currently, Tesla's coverage extends to North Austin, Tech Ridge, Westover Hills, Georgian Acres, Crestview, and various other neighborhoods that Waymo does not cover. Naturally, some areas, such as Tarrytown, remain outside of Tesla’s reach. In summary, residents of Austin now enjoy significantly expanded coverage throughout the metro area. And at least from Tesla's perspective, the map has a somewhat childish vibe, doesn’t it?
