Whenever a Toyota Mega Cruiser hits the market, I pay attention—not that I have the means to buy one, of course. They're just incredibly impressive. This particular unit listed on Bring a Trailer stands out because it’s a factory high-roof model featuring a windshield that rivals an IMAX screen, albeit with a flatter shape.

Toyota produced fewer than 150 civilian high-roofs during a six-year manufacturing period. Before arriving in New Hampshire, where it is currently located, it functioned as a safari tour vehicle in Kenya. Having been to New Hampshire myself, I can confidently say it is a stark contrast to a Kenyan wildlife reserve.

Anyway, this vehicle is equipped with a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with a displacement of 4.1 liters. Sticking to the number four theme, it has a four-speed automatic transmission and, naturally, four-wheel drive. While it has three locking differentials, which is quite a bit, it’s the maximum allowed.

With portal axles and 37-inch tires, this beast boasts over 16.5 inches of ground clearance. It can traverse almost any terrain, despite having a modest 153 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque.

You can easily understand why this Mega Cruiser was utilized for wildlife observation once you take a look inside. It accommodates 10 passengers and has enough headroom for standing. I can just imagine myself transporting a group, gazing at a bunch of lions through those upper windows, or stepping up on the built-in rear bumper step to stand on the roof and point out some wildebeest. Alright, maybe I’m getting a bit carried away, but just check out this command center and tell me you wouldn’t enjoy playing the role of a tour guide from there:

Like any 30-year-old workhorse, it has its imperfections. The interior has some stains, and the headliner is somewhat damaged, but that adds to its charm. The odometer indicates approximately 104,000 kilometers, or about 65,000 miles, plus an unknown number of idle hours. Not to worry, as these 15B-FT diesel engines could likely run for a million miles on rainwater from the jungle if needed.

The auction concludes on Monday, and at the time of this writing, the highest bid is just over $30,000. I could easily see that amount doubling or tripling, as the last Mega Cruiser sold on Bring a Trailer in 2024 fetched $167,500. Others have received bids around $100,000 since then but did not meet their reserve prices. It’s uncertain how much the seller believes this distinctly rare high-roof model is worth, so we’ll have to wait and see if anyone offers enough to take it home.

Toyota Mega Cruisers are seldom available for purchase in the U.S., and this factory high-roof version is even more rare.
