Second Toyota GR Hot Hatch Arriving in Europe | Carscoops
The most potent iteration of the Japanese hatchback may become available in Europe next year.
A representative from Toyota Europe indicated that efforts are underway to introduce the GR Corolla in Europe.
Starting in 2026, an additional production line for the all-wheel-drive hot hatch will be established in the UK.
Europe might receive the updated 2026 GR Corolla, which has already been hinted at for the US market.
In a somewhat surprising yet expected decision, Toyota recently announced plans to manufacture the GR Corolla at its facility in Derbyshire, UK, beginning in 2026. This will be the first instance where a Gazoo Racing model is produced outside of Japan, prompting considerable speculation.
Does this mean the GR Corolla could finally arrive in the European and UK markets? A recent statement from a high-level Toyota executive suggests it is certainly being considered.
Matt Harrison, Chief Corporate Officer at Toyota Motor Europe, shared insights with Auto Express regarding the company's approach. "We believe in manufacturing where we sell, so producing in Europe without selling there would go against that philosophy," he stated. "The gap between supply and demand is present now, so it’s about how quickly we can respond. We need to act promptly."
This clearly indicates that Toyota’s European division is eager to acquire the highly desired compact hot hatch, potentially expanding its performance lineup alongside the GR Yaris. The GR Yaris will be the only Gazoo Racing model available in Europe following the discontinuation of the GR 86 coupe due to emission regulations, and the GR Supra is set to be phased out later this year. Consequently, the outlook appears rather grim for Toyota enthusiasts seeking more excitement behind the wheel.

The JDM-spec GR Corolla features a right-hand-drive layout, making it suitable for the UK market.
The GR Corolla was first introduced in markets outside of Europe in 2022, launching in Japan, North America, and Australia. With high demand and limited availability (only 8,000 units planned for 2024), long waiting periods have prompted Toyota to consider an additional production location alongside the Motomachi Plant in Yokohama.
The automaker has hinted at an updated 2026 model year version of the rally-inspired vehicle, which promises enhanced aerodynamics, chassis improvements, and increased torque from the turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine producing 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS). It is likely that European and UK consumers will gain access to the updated model following its debut in the US market.
According to a British publication, the hot hatch could arrive on UK roads within the next 18 months once local production commences. Pricing is expected to be higher than that of the GR Yaris, which currently starts at £46,045 ($62,100) in the UK.
Potential Competitors
Internal combustion engine-powered hot hatches are becoming increasingly rare in Europe. Peugeot has not pursued a successor to the 308 GTI, the Renault Megane RS is no longer, the Ford Focus ST will cease production later this year, and the Honda Civic Type R recently received a farewell edition.
However, should the Toyota GR Corolla enter the European market, it will encounter formidable competition. The hot hatch will compete against all-wheel-drive performance models such as the VW Golf R, as well as more premium options like the Audi S3, BMW 135i xDrive, and Mercedes A35 4Matic+.
