Someone recently paid $204,000 for a 32-year-old Mustang in near-new condition.

This particular model is a rare SVT Cobra with only 12 miles on the odometer.

The final selling price more than doubled during the last 30 minutes of intense bidding on BaT.

It's quite unusual for a decades-old Mustang to sell for more than a brand-new Porsche 911 Turbo. However, in the unique and sometimes entertaining realm of collectible cars, anything can happen, including someone spending a fortune on a Fox body. And with Ford's upcoming 2026 Mustang FX package, the fascination with retro pony cars isn't waning anytime soon.

Although Ford's Fox body Mustang doesn't always receive the highest praise, it served as the foundation for several important iterations of the pony car. Among these is the SVT Cobra, which is now perceived as more special than many of the later models. The recent sale reflects this increasing status—a significant amount was just spent on one.

This is a 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra with merely 12 miles on the odometer. On average, that equates to roughly a third of a mile per year since it left the factory. Technically, all those miles are delivery mileage, meaning the car was never actually driven outside Ford's handling.

According to the auction house, the car has changed hands twice before, with the latest owner acquiring it earlier this year. The question now is whether the new owner will finally add miles to the odometer or keep it preserved in pristine condition.

A Record-Breaking Price for Fox Body Royalty

Selling for an impressive $204,000, this Mustang SVT Cobra is as close to like-new as possible when it comes to Fox body Mustangs. By comparison, a Cobra R (107 units produced), which is even rarer than the SVT (4,993 units), fetched $211,000 in January of last year and had 66 miles on it.

This particular model features Teal metallic paint, Opal grey leather upholstery, and immaculate 17-inch alloy wheels. Under the hood lies a 4.94-liter V8 originally rated at 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 280 lb-ft (379 Nm) of torque, delivered to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential and a five-speed manual transmission.

When it was new, this car had a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $21,578, which, when adjusted for inflation, would be approximately $48,138.46 in today's market. It’s astounding how high car prices have risen, isn't it? That amount is only slightly above the average transaction price for a new car today.

Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of this whole situation is that 30 minutes before the final bid closed, the highest offer was only $97,000. During that period, several bidders placed offers, but once the price surpassed $125,000, it came down to just two bidders who pushed it all the way to $204,000.

Clearly, both bidders wanted this car intensely, but one had a slight edge. Ultimately, someone deemed this Mustang worth $204,000, and now it’s theirs. Hopefully, the new owner will do more than simply polish it for photos. A Fox body in such pristine condition deserves to experience the road once more—even if just for mile thirteen.
