Teenager Leads Police on 132 MPH Pursuit Due to Being Late | Carscoops
The driver of a Mercedes was rushing to an appointment but ended up facing nine charges after being tracked down by police.
A teenager caught driving at 132 mph claimed he was hurrying to a job interview. Police halted the chase for safety reasons but later managed to locate the suspect.
He is facing nine separate charges, which include reckless driving and endangerment.
Being late can happen to anyone, but most people don't decide to treat the highway as their personal racetrack. However, a 19-year-old from Connecticut thought that getting to a job interview was more important than obeying traffic laws, public safety, and common sense, reaching speeds of 132 mph (212 km/h) while trying to evade police.
The incident took place Wednesday morning on Interstate 91 near Cromwell. Around 8:54 a.m., a Connecticut State Police trooper noticed a Mercedes-Benz E300 moving much faster than the other vehicles. The officer turned on the emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop.
Instead of pulling over, the teenage driver accelerated even more, swerving through traffic with unsafe lane changes in an effort to shake off the trooper. Due to the heightened risk posed to other drivers, the officer decided to terminate the pursuit. Before doing so, a speed radar clocked the Mercedes at an astonishing 132 mph (212 km/h), which was more than enough reason to conclude the chase for safety's sake.
Using the vehicle's license plate, the police were able to locate the registered owner. After a phone call, they discovered that a family member had been driving, later identified as Azmir Djurkovic, a 19-year-old from Cromwell.
When the officers reached out to Djurkovic directly, he confessed to being behind the wheel during the police encounter. His explanation was that he was in a hurry for a job interview, a detail that sounds like it belongs in a low-budget action comedy but was indeed noted in the police report.
Djurkovic later agreed to meet with troopers in Hartford, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
He now faces a list of charges that reads like a guide on what not to do on the road: Reckless Driving, Disobeying the Signal of an Officer, Failure to Maintain Lane, Passing on the Right, Improper Turn, Passing at an Unsafe Distance, Engaging Police in a Pursuit, Interfering with an Officer, and Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree.
He was released on a $2,500 bond and is set to appear in Middletown Superior Court on June 17. Hopefully, he will be able to get there at a more sensible speed this time, without endangering others.
