Honda Discontinues Its Most Popular Car in Europe, But It Makes a Statement | Carscoops

A limited run of 40 Ultimate Edition Civic Type Rs signifies the farewell of the Type R from the European market, having succumbed to EU regulations.

Honda is producing 40 Ultimate Edition Civic Type Rs for distribution throughout Europe.

Each vehicle features a Championship White finish, complemented by red decals, carbon accents, and comes with a special gift box.

The demise of the Type R was caused by the same GSR2 regulations that led to the discontinuation of Toyota's GR86.

The thrilling times for fans of Honda’s Civic Type R in Europe are coming to an end. The highly praised hot hatch is being discontinued in the region due to its failure to comply with stringent European regulations, but Honda is at least offering a stylish farewell.

Only 40 units of the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition will be made available in Europe before the entire R lineup is phased out in 2026. Each model is finished in Honda’s iconic Championship White with red accents along the hood and sides that match the distinctive color of the R badge.

Additional contrasting colors feature a black roof and various carbon components, including the rear wing. The interior includes Type R logo puddle lights, a carbon sill trim, and more carbon fiber on the console. Buyers of the Ultimate Edition will also enjoy additional lighting that highlights the door trim, cup holder, footwell, and underseat areas, although that may not be of particular interest to Type R aficionados.

However, they may appreciate the included gift box, which contains a numbered emblem indicating which of the 40 units they own, plus a carbon key ring. Honda is also providing custom floor mats and a car cover, which could be useful for those considering storing their vehicle as a collectible.

This marks a temporary end for the Civic Type R as the model continues to be available in the US and Japan, and it could potentially return to Europe, provided the Civic model isn’t replaced by a crossover. The Type R is being withdrawn in Europe due to its inability to meet new GSR2 legislation, which requires driver monitoring technology. These same regulations have led Toyota Europe to halt GR86 imports and prompted Porsche to cease the production of combustion-powered 718 models.

Honda has not disclosed the pricing for the Ultimate Edition, but it will likely be priced higher than the standard Type R, which is currently £51,905 in the UK and €58,900 in Germany.
