Disney Developing New 'National Park' Inspired by 'Cars'
Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida is introducing a new Cars-themed area designed with an outdoor vibe. Named “Piston Peak National Park,” this section will allow visitors to interact with talking vehicles and engage in Disney-style off-road adventures within the Cars universe.
As described on the Disney Parks Blog: “Envision a breathtaking wilderness filled with towering trees, snow-capped mountains, stunning waterfalls, flowing rivers, and majestic geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak draws inspiration from the Rocky Mountain region and the history and iconic landmarks of the American Frontier and its national parks.”
Piston Peak NP serves as the backdrop for the Cars spinoff film Planes: Fire & Rescue. The trailer below provides an idea of what the set design may resemble, though it’s likely the Magic Kingdom version will exclude any scenes of a raging wildfire.
There is currently no official opening date, but reports indicate that construction on Piston Peak will begin on July 7, leading to the closure of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. The fan blog Pixar Post estimates that the opening will be in 2027.
Once completed, Disney promises experiences such as exploring a visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, “majestic landscapes,” and an off-road ride. “Rugged mountains with dramatic peaks will be situated along a peaceful waterway opposite Grizzly Hall, and impressive geysers from the renowned Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will extend into the paths of our off-road rally,” states Disney.
Details about the rally ride are still to be announced, but in March, Disney’s official Instagram shared a clip highlighting the research and development aimed at ensuring a fun experience. It appears that park planners explored UTV rides to gauge the ideal pace and level of bouncing for visitors. Additionally, it is reported that there will be a gentler attraction for younger children.
The concept vehicle designs for the project are quite charming. It’s possible these rally cars may even inspire their own show or movie in the future.
I’m not particularly into amusement parks, but I did visit Magic Kingdom last year for a weekend and had a great experience. There’s already a Cars attraction, which, while relatively mild, is enjoyable—you can meet a large animatronic Lightning McQueen and view an animated race on an immersive screen. Ka-chow!
