The racing community has lost yet another small-town venue. North Carolina's New River All American Speedway has announced its closure.
"Over the past weeks and months, we have engaged in numerous discussions about the future of New River. Yesterday, we made the difficult decision to close our doors," the track stated on its Facebook page, without elaborating on the specific challenges it faced.
Founded in 1999 as Coastal Plains Speedway, the venue kicked off its major racing events later that year with a race in NASCAR’s Goody’s Dash series. It has seen numerous notable drivers compete on its 4/10-mile track, including Dale Earnhardt Jr. However, its popularity waned over time, leading to its first closure in 2015. The track briefly reopened in 2018, only to shut down again, and then reopened for another stint in 2021. Initially, it appeared that this latest revival would succeed, as it was sanctioned by NASCAR for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Similar to many small-town tracks, New River All American Speedway offered a diverse array of races and automotive events. Its calendar for 2025 featured 33 races, including a significant event for the SMART Modified Tour on August 29. There were also plans for car shows.
At this point, it is still uncertain what the future holds for the track. Given its history of multiple closures and reopenings over the past twenty years, it may make another return. Alternatively, the owner may choose to permanently close down and sell the property. In the meantime, Coastal Plains Dragway, located next to New River All American Speedway, is expected to remain operational, according to Short Track Scene.
