One of my favorite aspects of playing Grand Theft Auto is examining the “fictional” vehicles and trying to deduce what they resemble. The dignified Admiral, for instance, is clearly based on the Mercedes-Benz W123. Conversely, there’s a lesser-known sports car called the Superlite SL-C that resembles a vehicle you might unlock after completing a GTA mission, and one is currently on the market.
Superlite refers to the SL-C as “the perfect supercar,” indicating that its engineers have invested considerable enthusiasm into the project. It’s a kit car compatible with various engines, allowing you to essentially customize the power output to your preference, and it has been designed to be relatively straightforward to assemble at home. It features an aluminum chassis, fiberglass body, aluminum suspension parts, and a mid-engine configuration that achieves a 46% front/54% rear weight distribution, although this figure can change depending on the engine you install.
However, in terms of styling, it’s quite generic, which might explain why it seems to have been produced by the Rockstar Games design team. It’s almost as if a Maserati MC12 and a 24 Hours of Le Mans prototype had offspring. The version listed on Bring a Trailer is covered in a copper wrap that enhances its GTA-like appearance. The setting is ideal: It makes the main image of the listing look like a screenshot from the game. I can easily imagine driving the SL-C to that parking lot and stepping into the old RV behind it to collect a hidden package before heading to the safehouse.
I’ll give Superlite some grace. As a small operation with limited resources, it probably prioritized handling over aesthetics. Additionally, there aren’t countless ways to design an aerodynamic supercar with a mid-mounted engine, which is why many race cars appear similar.
At least the likelihood of discovering two identical SL-Cs is minimal. It’s a kit car, meaning it ultimately depends on your customizations. The one on Bring a Trailer is powered by a 6.0-liter LS V8 connected to a six-speed manual transmission from the 996-generation 911 GT3, a combination that should be quite exhilarating. According to Bring a Trailer, the drivetrain was previously entirely Porsche-powered: This SL-C was equipped with the same 3.6-liter flat-six engine from the 911 until a few years ago. The V8 has been modified, and Superlite lists the weight at 2,400 pounds, so I can imagine it would be a lot of fun to drive.
Bidding currently stands at $17,000 with approximately five days remaining in the auction. For context, this very car sold for $68,000 in September 2017 when it was still powered by Porsche. More recently, Bring a Trailer sold another SL-C with a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 engine for $63,000.
