The new Retro Emotion Package from China's iCar gives the V23 a military green vinyl wrap, an updated grille, and additional features.

The kit includes a matte green wrap inspired by military design and black steel wheels.

iCar offers single and dual-motor versions of the V23 that can produce up to 211 horsepower.

It includes a distinctive front grille, black bumpers, and a spotlight mounted on the hood.

A small but growing group of automakers is discovering how to make electric vehicles unique in all the right ways. One such brand is Chery’s iCar, which has some unconventional models, with the V23 being particularly noteworthy. This robust SUV resembles a blend of a Land Rover Defender and a Suzuki Jimny, designed with a strong emphasis on straight lines. Now, it has become even more distinctive with the introduction of a retro-themed body kit.

The standard V23 already embraces a retro aesthetic, characterized by its boxed profile, upright front and rear ends, and pronounced fender flares that give it a strong presence. However, the new ‘Retro Emotion Package’ enhances this look with a matte green wrap that complements its design beautifully. While it may seem a bit out of place amidst urban traffic, it blends perfectly in more rugged environments.

In addition to the special wrap, a unique front grille and a black bumper enhance the overall look. A large spotlight has also been added to the hood, although it appears somewhat inexpensive; traditional circular spotlights might have been a better option.

Further enhancing its visual appeal are black rocker panels, side steps, and 19-inch wheels fitted with all-terrain tires. Therefore, it appears ready for off-road adventures, whether it will actually venture off the pavement or not.

The iCar brand is evidently committed to developing an upgrade kit that not only has an appealing appearance but also serves practical functions. A report from China’s Ithome states that the matte green wrap includes an anti-glare treatment that meets military concealment standards. Additionally, the front grille can be swiftly removed and replaced by the owner.

Given the affordability of most electric vehicles in China, it’s not surprising that this upgrade kit is also reasonably priced. Depending on the configuration, it ranges from 4,000 to 10,500 yuan, or approximately $550 to $1,450 at current exchange rates. As for the V23, its price starts at 109,800 yuan (around $15,000) and goes up to 149,800 yuan (approximately $20,500), keeping it firmly in the budget electric vehicle segment.

For perspective, the base model's price is roughly equivalent to that of a used 2021 Nissan Versa with 65,000 miles—though it certainly offers more character.

In terms of performance, the entry-level models feature a 136-horsepower motor powering the rear axle, while higher trims come with a dual-motor setup producing a total of 211 horsepower. These numbers may be modest, but they’re likely sufficient to keep this compact SUV nimble on both back roads and city streets.
