The occupants of a Mercedes-AMG GT were involved in a crash during a track day event at Sepang, Malaysia.
The car failed to decelerate and crashed into a barrier at high speed during the event.
Fortunately, the passenger compartment remained intact, preserving the lives of those inside.
An onboard camera recorded a shocking incident that took place recently at Sepang Raceway in Malaysia. The event involved a Mercedes-AMG GT, a track day, and reportedly catastrophic brake failure. According to at least one report, the failure occurred after the car owner assured the driver that all components were ready for racing. Both the driver and owner are now said to be facing serious injuries.
The specific date of the crash is uncertain, but some sources indicate it may have happened on May 18. The video shows the driver of the Mercedes-AMG GT exiting turn 13 and heading towards turn 14. As they approach, one car ahead enters the pit lane while another remains on the track. The issue becomes clear toward the end of the lengthy straight.
As the AMG attempts to overtake a hatchback on the right, both vehicles enter the braking zone. The hatchback appears to have no issues, while the AMG reaches approximately 230 km/h (142 mph) but fails to slow down adequately. The driver mutters something and struggles with the steering wheel, yet the sports car continues straight into the corner. Unable to stop, the driver straightens the wheel and crashes head-on into the barrier. Turn 15 is also an off-camber turn, making it even more challenging to navigate when a vehicle enters too quickly.
According to a Facebook user who shared the footage, the passenger is the owner of the car. It is claimed that the owner had informed the driver that the vehicle was fully race-ready, including the braking system. However, it appears that a complete brake failure occurred due to a ruptured brake line. While it cannot be confirmed with certainty, the video seems to support this reasoning. Images from the aftermath show a severed brake hose, although it’s possible that the damage was caused during the crash.
It is essential to ensure that any car is adequately prepared before a track day, including checking the brakes, cooling systems, engine fluids, and more. In this incident, whatever caused the crash also resulted in severe injuries. The original poster mentioned that the driver suffered spinal injuries.
On a positive note, the AMG GT seems to have performed remarkably well in protecting its two occupants. Photos depict an almost intact passenger compartment, with the windshield remaining unshattered and the doors still operable post-collision. Here’s hoping both occupants enjoy a full and swift recovery.
