We Waited 12 Years for GTA 6, and Rockstar Just Announced Another Delay | Carscoops
Developer Rockstar Games has announced that the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 has been postponed to May 26, 2026.
The sixth version of the open-world game was initially set to release this fall.
This delay means that it will be 13 years since the launch of GTA 5 by the time the new game arrives.
The anticipation for the next chapter in the iconic Grand Theft Auto series is incredibly high, but Rockstar has indicated that players will have to wait a bit longer. The release of GTA 6 has been rescheduled for 2026, as confirmed by the developer.
Originally, GTA 6 was expected to hit stores and digital platforms this fall, but it will now not be available until May next year. By that time, 13 years will have passed since the release of the still-popular GTA 5. Rockstar explained that they made the tough choice to ensure that the lengthy wait is justified and does not lead to disappointment.
In a statement, the company expressed, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to complete the game.
“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to achieve the quality you expect and deserve.”
There has been little news on the GTA front recently, following a surge of information that heightened anticipation for the game in the early 2020s. Initially, some gameplay footage of GTA 6 leaked online, much to Rockstar’s dismay, and later, the company released the first official trailer at the end of 2023.
The trailer revealed that GTA 6 will take place in a fictional version of Miami known as Vice City, a location featured in previous installments of the series. In addition to a new lineup of cars, GTA 6 will also include street takeovers.
While the delay is disappointing, many are willing to wait if it ensures a smoother launch, avoiding the issues faced by CyberPunk 2077 when it was released five years ago.
