Audi has recalled over 44,000 vehicles because of a display malfunction caused by cable damage.
The affected models include the 2021 A6, Q7, RS6 Avant, and various performance variants.
Owners of these affected models will be notified about the recall starting May 30, 2025.
As a pioneer of digital instrument clusters, Audi’s ‘virtual cockpit’ is recognized as one of the most advanced systems available. However, a defect in the cluster has led to a recall affecting more than 44,000 Audi vehicles in the U.S. While digital displays are impressive, they appear to be more susceptible to failure compared to their analog counterparts.
A recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that Audi has identified that the virtual cockpit display can shut down due to potential damage to one of the flat cables in the cluster. Audi states that even minor damage to this cable increases contact resistance, which can automatically turn off the display.
If the screen shuts off, drivers lose access to crucial information such as engine speed, vehicle speed, and gear indicators.
The recall pertains to a range of Audi models, including 2021 SQ8s produced between July 23, 2020, and March 18, 2021, along with 2021 Audi A6s made from July 16, 2020, to March 29, 2021. Additional models affected include 2021 A7s (July 24, 2020 – April 19, 2021), A8s (July 30, 2020 – May 6, 2021), Q7s (July 2, 2020 – April 1, 2021), Q8s (July 2, 2020 – March 19, 2021), and RS6 Avant models (July 24, 2020 – March 24, 2021).
Other affected models are 2021 RS7s (July 24, 2020 – March 30, 2021), 2021 RS Q8s (July 3, 2020 – March 18, 2021), 2021 S6s (August 31, 2020 – March 26, 2021), 2021 S7s (August 31, 2020 – March 29, 2021), 2021 S8s (July 15, 2020 – March 26, 2021), 2021 A6 Allroads (July 20, 2020 – March 25, 2021), and 2021 SQ7s (July 22, 2020 – March 19, 2021). In total, 44,387 vehicles are included in the recall.
Starting May 30, 2025, Audi will notify owners about the recall and has directed dealers to update the software to ensure it is less sensitive, preventing shutdowns due to minor changes in the cable’s contact resistance.
